Guitarist and composer Jeff Parker is one of the big names of the famous Chicago avant-garde jazz scene. Parker is widely praised as one of the most innovative guitarists of our time. He stood at the cradle of countless well-known groups, including the post-rock band Tortoise and the avant-garde collectives Isotope 217 and The Chicago Underground Trio. In addition, Parker is regularly asked as a guitarist, producer or composer for jazz giants such as Joshua Redman, Fred Anderson and Brian Blade. Two years ago Parker released a pioneering album on the label International Anthem, called ‘The New Breed’, on which he and his band brought a new twist to fusing hip-hop, jazz, electronics and free improvisation. Parker has also released a number of (difficult to obtain) solo albums, which have acquired cult status especially amongst free jazz and impro-heads. In addition to his participation in the super group of Makaya McCraven, Jeff Parker will play a solo set earlier in the evening at Koorenhuis (lounge). Besides, he will join a panel interview with Makaya, led by writer and biographer Ashley Kahn, to talk about the innovative Chicago scene.
