Perhaps one of the most remarkable Dutch artists of today: Frank Wienk, better known as Binkbeats. His intensive relationship between object and sound results in an unparalleled voyage of discovery, in which samples and other complicated electronic sounds are created and used analogously. Binkbeats received worldwide attention through his Beats Unravelled series, where he impressively translated tracks from Flying Lotus, Aphex Twin and J. Dilla into acoustic, tangible atmospheres, without detracting from the original works. With an enormous collection of instruments and toys – varying from vibraphone, guzheng (Chinese harp) and yes, even typewriters – Wienk quickly gained an impressive following. Binkbeats now has an oeuvre of his own originals in which he collaborates with other artists from the creative Utrecht stronghold Kytopia in a multi-disciplinary way. He toured Europe last year, including a sold-out show at the legendary The Jazz Café in London. On stage, Wienk naturally surrounds himself with a dizzying amount of toys, instruments and gear. For MJAZZ18, Binkbeats is accompanied by partner-in-crime, keyboardist Niels Broos, known from The Kyteman Orchestra, Jameszoo, Daedelus and his flirts with labels like Alpha Pup Records and Brainfeeder. Broos made an impression on the first edition of MJAZZ as part of a duo with drummer Jamie Peet. Especially for this edition, the festival has invited the Norwegian multi-instrumentalist Lars Horntveth to join both gentlemen. Horntveth is well known as band leader and producer of Norwegian prog-group Jaga Jazzist. His style as a musician and producer has received worldwide recognition and critical acclaim. It varies from intensive improv to classical music, always with the focus on strong melodies and harmonies. Horntveth worked with a.o. Todd Terje, A-HA and Susanne Sundfør.
